Go Red por tu Corazón

TOLEDO: The Latina community rallied together in red at the community’s second Go Red por tu Corazón Luncheon. Go Red por tu Corazón is an American Heart Association initiative that celebrates the energy, passion and power of Latinas to unite and end heart disease, the leading cause of death among Latinas.

The Luncheon, held on Sept. 5, 2019 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Sofia Quintero Art and Cultural Center, educated Latinas about the risk factors and symptoms of heart disease and stroke and empower them to make small but significant lifestyle changes in their own lives and in the lives of their families.

Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death for Latinas; on average, Latinas are likely to develop heart disease 10 years earlier than non-Latinas. Despite their risk, only 1 in 3 are aware that heart disease is their No. 1 killer.

To address these issues, the American Heart Association established Go Red por tu Corazón to meet the unique needs of Latinas, and men who love them, by building on the strong ties to family and cultural traditions.

“Heart disease is the number one killer of women and yet we never talk about it,” said Elaina Hernández, who is the Go Red por tu Corazón chairwoman and director of El Corazón de México Ballet Folklorico, instructor at Zumba Fitness, and leader at the Believe Center Inc.  “We, Latinas, are too busy helping our children, partners and family that we forget to take time for ourselves. Go Red por tu Corazón reminds us to self-care and start/restart healthy life choices.”

The Go Red por tu Corazón Luncheon featured a health & wellness expo, fitness activities, cooking demos and survivor stories from the local Latina community. Go Red por tu Corazón is sponsored nationally by CVS Health and locally by ProMedica.
