According to the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Article 14, everyone has a right to seek asylum (www.un.org).  The United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) states that any foreign national that has “well-founded” fears of persecution is a refugee and not an “illegal immigrant.”  Neither refugees nor asylum-seekers are “illegal” (www.unhcr.org)

César Chávez Celebration to feature lecture by renowned Chicano civil rights and educator José A. Gutiérrez

In 2003, former governor Jennifer Granholm established March 31 as César E. Chávez Day in Michigan. The date marks the birthday of the labor leader, who worked to improve the lives and livelihoods of impoverished, disenfranchised farm workers in the nation’s agricultural fields. Wayne State University’s Center for Latino/a and Latin American Studies will commemorate the occasion with a public lecture by José Angel Gutiérrez, a contemporary of Chávez who played a vital role in shaping the direction of the Chicano Movement.

César Chávez died near his hometown of Yuma, AZ on April 22, 1993 at the age of 66. Chávez was in San Luis, AZ to assist UFW attorneys defend the union against a lawsuit brought by Bruce Church Inc. (BCI), a giant California-based lettuce and vegetable producer.
